“Piranha”, as his friends and fans call him, is “blazingly fast” straight away in any car, even with 700 hp and more. Last year he fought for the championship title with his 1978 Formula 2 March 782 BMW in the international historic Formula 2 championship after several victories of the season until the last round in Dijon, only then losing it due to massive engine problems.
But his bite remained undiminished - the Molsberger now won the 2024 season opener of the “F2 Classic Interseries” at the “Grand Prix de France Historique” in Paul Ricard.
In the best racing weather in front of a whopping 80,000 spectators, Kaufmann won both races of the historic Formula 2 racing series.
In the two free practice sessions in Paul Ricard, Kaufmann tested the engine and transmission, set the best time in qualifying, watched the competition from the pit lane and saved the tires for the two races.
After the exceptionally rolling start, he took the lead in race 1 and never gave it up - start-to-finish victory and fastest lap of the race. In the second race he repeated his show exactly and really put his stamp on the race. “What a great, successful weekend,” beamed “Piranha” afterwards.
“And what an atmosphere: I found myself there on equal terms with many greats from Formula 1 history as special guests, Alain Prost, Jean Alesi, René Arnoux, Jean-Pierre Jarier, Jacky Ickx to name just a few, and that All in an environment of over 40 historic Formula 1 and Formula 2 racing cars – what a celebration!”
The next round of the Historic Formula 2 will take place on the 22nd/23rd. June at the Historic GP of Zandvoort
Formula Kaufmann
Wolfgang Kaufmann from the Westerwald, who won Formula 3 races against Michael Schumacher more than three decades ago and placed ahead of him more often, has had an uninterrupted racing career since then, across the racing car categories and, in recent years, alternating between them modern and historical motorsport, its impressive form is quite remarkable.
