The two races of the "Formula 2 Classic Interseries" were also embedded in a racing program that included historic Formula 1 racing cars and also featured an impressive starting field. Wolfgang Kaufmann competed here again in his '78 ex-Stephen South March 782 BMW.
"In free practice, everything initially ran smoothly, but then the engine over-riched, running on only three and a half cylinders," said Kaufmann. "After a thorough check, the troubleshooting revealed that something had gone wrong with the mechanical injection pump. Fortunately, the problem was fixed, so nothing stood in the way of qualifying.
In this, the only qualifying session, I only drove a few laps to save the tires for the two races, put the car in second place on the grid, and observed the competition."
The races began with a rolling start. "Unfortunately, there are no standing starts in Grand Prix races anymore," Wolfgang Kaufmann describes his perspective from the cockpit. "But initially, everything went as planned for me; I took the lead and was even able to extend my advantage. During a yellow flag period shortly before the end of the race, my competitors made up ground on me because I had to stay behind a slow-moving driver who was lapping and whom I wasn't allowed to overtake. Then Manfredo Rossi di Montelera overtook me during the yellow flag period, which was basically a no-go...
The light was green, but overtaking is only allowed when the light is green, not when it's just visible!
But the race director didn't take any action against Rossi di Montelera – unbelievable.
I then 'took care of it' like a piranha, outbraking Manfredo a few laps before the checkered flag, and won.
The fans went wild on the cool-down lap."
After a grid walk for the fans in sunny weather on Sunday, a light rain began to fall at the start of Race 2 – but all the cars were on slicks... "I approached the race a little more 'cautiously' and fell back to third place in the early stages," said Kaufmann. "My gap to the two leaders remained the same; I was always within striking distance. The track dried out more and more, Piranha sharpened his teeth and launched an attack. The leader made a mistake, I was in second place behind Rossi, then I applied pressure and took the lead with two laps to go – second race, second win.
And I was able to take home some very valuable trophies; that's the Grand Prix De France Historique, too!"
"Beautiful, valuable trophies"
Wolfgang Kaufmann remains on the winning track, beginning the new season in Le Castellet just as he ended the old one in Spa, right at the top of the winner's podium. "The Grand Prix De France Historique at the Circuit Paul Ricard was a mega event again this year," enthuses Wolfgang Kaufmann. "There was a fantastic atmosphere at its finest, with a crowd of perhaps 80,000 or 90,000 knowledgeable and emotional fans over the three days, who weren't kept in check by 'overly important' security. Everyone was able to move around almost everywhere with beaming faces."
