14th overall Formula 2 victory!

Wolfgang Kaufmann is currently racing from victory to victory in the Historic Formula 2 races with his 1978 March 782-BMW.

At the Historic Grand Prix in Zandvoort, he achieved his 14th overall victory in this racing car category since 2021. "Looking back, it's a bit of a shame that the Formula 2 European Championship no longer existed when I celebrated my first successes in Formula 3 in the second half of the 1980s. I certainly could have achieved quite a bit back then," the Westerwald native is convinced. "But I'm more or less making up for that now."
In the only qualifying session for the "F2 Classic Interseries" at Zandvoort, Kaufmann achieved the fifth-best practice time of 1:38.205 minutes, 1.4 seconds behind pole-sitter James Lay in the March 762. "However, I was the only one of the top drivers using used tires," he explains, "they had already completed qualifying and the two races/wins at the 'Grand Prix de France Historique' at Paul Ricard." Ultimately, however, he was able to start the race from the second row, as Briton Matthew Watts in the March 772 was penalized three places.

He entered the two races on the North Sea coast with a fresh set of tires. "After the start of race one, I moved into second position right in the first corner, the 'Tarzan Corner,'" says "Piranha," describing his cockpit perspective. "I then tried to put pressure on the leading Briton, James Lay, and was always within striking distance. However, a few laps before the checkered flag, the safety car was deployed – and the race was unfortunately flagged off with a red flag. Second place overall was still a top result."
Before the start of the second race on Sunday, the clouds gathered, it darkened, and rain began to fall. "But it was clear that it would only rain briefly and then stop again," explains Wolfgang Kaufmann. "Nevertheless, the track was now wet, and the big question was: slicks or rain tires? We opted for rain tires, like almost everyone else in the field; only Manfredo Rossi di Montelera started with slicks. But after just the two opening laps, it became clear to me: slicks would have been good, but now it was too late. The Indianapolis start – unfortunately, the standing start no longer exists – went perfectly for me; I stayed in second place and was always in the slipstream of the leading Lay." With four laps to go, "Piranha bit." "I braked a little earlier than him, accelerated a little earlier and more aggressively, and outpaced him – cheers in the stands and victory in the second race!"

"It was a hugely successful weekend in Zandvoort, but after three years, the trophies are now worth nothing," summed up Wolfgang Kaufmann. He also now leads the interim F2 Classic Interseries standings in points, and with two races still to go in Dijon and Misano, this is another outstanding position this year.
