Kaufmann on the podium in Hockenheim

Successful start to the season in Historic Formula 2 for Wolfgang Kaufmann.

With the Bosch Hockenheim Historic - The Jim Clark Revival, the 2022 motorsport season started with a highlight for Wolfgang Kaufmann. This applied to the strictly sporty part as well as the atmosphere next to the asphalt track. "No matter where you looked and came, it was incredibly crowded," said Wolfgang Kaufmann, describing the positive response from spectators and participants to the Bosch Hockenheim Historic. "Many fans were out and about in the paddock, the view of a fully occupied grandstand in the Motodrom, just an incredibly great backdrop!".

With such motivation, Kaufmann then showed what is possible with his March 782 BMW in the Historic Formula 2 Series. With due caution in free practice after the car had been parked for a long time, which still meant the fourth fastest time. In qualifying, "Piranha" then showed a bit more teeth, a lap time of 1:40.880 minutes meant starting position 3 in a strong Formula 2 field, in which some of the fast British participants were also at the start.

Race 1 on Saturday was 15 laps of pure driving fun. At the start it was 2nd place and Wolfgang Kaufmann defended it skillfully and confidently to the finish. Only local hero Thomas Amweg in a Ralt RT1 had to let Kaufmann go first. "Amweg only drives Hockenheim and has perfect material, you can't get there." But Kaufmann had the rest of the field firmly under control. With rank 2, the starting position for the second race on Sunday was set, so it started from the front row. Again, 15 laps had to be mastered and the goal of repeating second place was clearly formulated.

"In the beginning everything went according to plan," explained Wolfgang Kaufmann. “But after three or four laps I noticed that something was suddenly wrong. When accelerating out of the hairpin bend, I deliberately slowed down and drove to the pits with the foam slowed down. That was exactly the right decision, because the rear left wheel carrier was torn. Thank God I noticed that quickly, so that nothing worse happened and no consequential damage occurred either."
The second podium place of the weekend was history, but Wolfgang Kaufmann was still in a good mood: “It was a really nice event with lots of fans from young to old and an incredibly good atmosphere. You notice that as a driver and that makes it even more fun!”

The March 782 BMW will be on 18./19. June in Paul Ricard, France, to start again at the Historic GP of France.

Before that, Wolfgang Kaufmann still has to do the 24h Classic as part of the 24h Nürburgring, then with a Ford Escort RS 2000 on the combination of GP circuit and Nordschleife.
