In his third outing in 2024 in the “F2 Classic Interseries” for historic Formula 2 racing cars, at the “SPA SIX HOURS”, Wolfgang Kaufmann from the Westwood was the most successful driver of the weekend in terms of the overall rankings of the two races in the Ardennes Victory, a second place with the March 782-BMW – and that on his debut in a single-seater racing car in Spa-Francorchamps, here almost straight away. He also had to go through really bad weather in free practice and qualifying. “It was pouring at times, lots of water, aquaplaning, extremely difficult conditions,” says Wolfgang Kaufmann. “In Spa you are still driving through the spray of the car in front when you are 500 meters behind, the car floats on the straights, you have a lot of chances of losing the car.”
Of course, he knows the racetrack from numerous 24-hour races here and in a wide variety of cars, including the LMP 1 prototype. “But it’s still something different to compete here again with a different car.”
Nevertheless, in the rainy qualifying he managed to take third place on the grid out of 24 starters with a lap in 3:07.221 minutes (average 134.7 km/h). The first race on Friday took place on a dry track. “And until then I had no idea how Spa would be driving in Formula 2 in the dry,” said Kaufmann. “I went into the first race with used tires, I wanted to first see what it looked like and where I stood.” 6.1 seconds behind the Brit Matthew Watts in the March 772-BMW, the fun in the Formula 2 racing car Knows him well, he already took an excellent second place in the overall ranking.
“I discovered that my gear ratio wasn't right at all, it was far too long, and on the long straights and in the very fast corner combinations 'Eau Rouge' and 'Blanchimont' I rarely got into fifth gear, which of course was a lot of top speed cost. I changed the gear ratio on Saturday morning for the second run.”
The entire field started the second race on rain tires, but after another rain the track was pretty wet. “The sun did come out,” said Wolfgang Kaufmann, “but it takes a while in Spa for it to dry out.” At the end of the first lap, he overtook Matthew Watts, who later ended up in the gravel trap, and continuously increased his lead. “After three or four laps, about half of the track was dry. Then a safety car phase brought the field back together, but a slower driver held up behind me, so I was able to benefit from it as the leader. This was not inconvenient for me because I had to drive with one hand because the other had to hold the gear lever in fourth gear, which kept popping out.” Wolfgang Kaufmann won the second race.
“Spa was a great end to my season, first and second places again,” he summed up, “and it was a mega season with four wins and two second places.”
